Some interesting facts

Ebook sales overtook Hardbacks in the UK in 2012:

Paperbacks: 74,829
Hardbacks: 26,732
Ebooks: 57,999
(Market Research & Statistics/The Publishers Association)

Points from an article by Alison Flood,
13th June 2014 at
Print sales fell by 10% last year and book purchasing overall was down 4%, but ebook sales continue to grow - up 20% in the UK in 2013, with 80 million ebooks bought by UK consumers.

Self-published books' share of the UK market grew by 79% in 2013, with 18 million self-published books bought by UK readers last year - worth £59 million.

Self-published books still account for a tiny proportion of the overall market – 5% of the 323 million total books bought, and 3% of the £2,185 million spent on books last year.

The fastest-growing genres in self-publishing were thrillers and fantasy titles.  Price and blurb are the top prompts to buy self-published ebooks on impulse buys - discovered by browsing in genre, or in the recommendation or offer sections.  But, as authors are becoming more established, they get followings, just like mainstream authors.

Self-published ebooks tend to be fiction, but they are growing fastest in children's.

Self-published ebooks tend to be bought by women: 37% of purchases were by females older than 45, 32% by younger women - and this was the fastest-growing area.  20% are bought by males older than 45, and 11% by younger males.

PriceWaterhouseCoopers predict that the ebook could overtake the physical book by 2018.
